So I do not think that I have ever come right out and say this but...my biggest guilty pleasure is reality television. I know what it is about it, but if you put a group of random strangers on an island, in a house, or in a race I will probably being watching it. The scantly clad women, the over the top drama, and the competitive nature of reality TV always draws me in. I have spent many 8:00pm hours watching these shows and always find myself rooting for someone. And just like everyone else who watches reality TV, I have my opinion about the people, the drama, and the winners. So I have decided that my opinion is as valid as the next, so I decide to type it down and share it with the world. So I hope that you enjoy and read each week. So it begins....
So I am by no means a devout viewer of the Bachelor, but always seem to catch part of the episode when my fiancee is watching. So of course, the two hour finale was on Monday night and I stuck watching/surfing the net (who says that anymore) and they went through the whole long drawn out process. The girls meet the parents, they go on their dates, he shops for a ring, they cry, they kiss, he says no to one, they cry some more, he chooses the other girl and....the whole world hates this Jake guy (oh and they cry some more).
Why is everyone so mad at this guy for proposing to the "wrong" girl. This show has been airing for a total of 8 weeks from 8pm-10pm each week. With about 30 minutes of commercials, that leaves 90 minutes of show time for ALL the women, the interviews, and the random shots of Jake thinking. So let's say Vienna gets 1/4 of the air time (overestimation), giving her around 20-25 minutes a week for 8 weeks (8 X 25) and you get around 3 1/2 hours of airtime of Vienna. So based on these three and a half hours of airtime women around the world have come to the following conclusions:
-That Vienna is a bitch
-That the thought of Jake and Vienna make them vomit
-That the fact that Jake picked Vienna confirms that all men are idiots
-That good women always get the short end of the stick
-And the worse is...THAT JAKE HAS MADE THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF HIS LIFE
Could you imagine if this situation happened in your real, everyday life? I believe the conversation would go like this:
Person 1: So I have this friend who just proposed to this girl and she is an absolutely horrible match for him. Every time that I think about them together I vomit and cannot believe that they are together.
Person 2: Really? That sounds absolutely horrible. You should tell him. When did you meet her?
Person 1: Well I have never really met her in person. I have seen her in a wedding video, read her Facebook profile, and saw her collection of DVDs and CDs.
Person 2: So you never have had an actual conversation with her?
Person 1: No, but I can tell from the two hours I have seen that she is not the one. Can you believe that he is going to end up with her? She will take him for everything.
As you can see this is a bit ridiculous. What gives the right to hate on this woman? The fact that she didn't get along with 24 other women who were fighting to date the man she was in love with. The fact that she was not the happy, go lucky girl that everyone loved on the show. The fact that she was a little more abrasive than the others. It is a television show. We know what the producers of The Bachelor want us to know about her. It is television and they always need a villain. How many times has the world loved the person the Bachelor or Bachelorette has chosen only to result in a relationship that ends in three weeks? What makes us such experts on love? We shouldn't be so pissed off at Jake for choosing the "wrong" girl, but instead happy that Jake found someone. Everyone in this world deserves love whether everyone in the world likes them or not including Vienna. So everyone give Vienna and Jake a break. I personally, hope that they live a long, happy life together and prove everyone wrong. If not, well...
its not reality it's Reality Television.
